Smith on target for United

Alan Smith scored his first goal of the season to set Manchester United on their way against Charlton at The Valley and show there was very much life after Roy Keane.

Ruud van Nistelrooy saw an early goal-bound effort cleared off the line, and it was no surprise when Smith slotted home from the edge of the area on 37 minutes.
