Munich extend lead

Bayern Munich opened up a five-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga thanks to a 3-1 home win over high-flying rivals Werder Bremen.

Miroslav Klose became the first opposing player to score at Munich’s Allianz Arena when he netted after just 36 seconds to give Bremen the lead, but Bastian Schweinsteiger replied within two minutes to level matters.

Claudio Pizarro and Roy Makaay then both netted to give Bayern a 3-1 lead at half-time, an advantage they defended throughout the second half as they eased to their sixth straight home win this season.

With third-placed Hamburg not playing until Sunday, Bremen remain second, five points clear of fourth-placed Schalke who recorded a convincing 3-0 victory over lowly Duisburg.

Fifth-placed Hertha Berlin won 3-0 against second-bottom Kaiserslautern, Eintracht Frankfurt defeated Arminia Bielefeld by the same score, Cologne drew 1-1 at Wolfsburg and Borussia Dortmund lost 2-1 at Bayer Leverkusen.

Hannover scored goals in the final five minutes to grab a 2-2 draw at home to Mainz.
