Pearce: Distin would shine on world stage

Manchester City manager Stuart Pearce believes Sylvain Distin should be going to the World Cup with France.

Manchester City manager Stuart Pearce believes Sylvain Distin should be going to the World Cup with France.

The 27-year-old defender has become an influential figure in the club’s climb up the Premiership table.

Former England star Pearce is convinced City skipper Distin can move to the next level.

“If he is not an international player I am a Dutchman,” Pearce told BBC GMR.

“He has got a bit of everything. He is unbelievable. He’s got pace, he’s got power, he can jump 16 feet.

“Sylvain captains the club and is a fantastic man to boot.”

City have tightened up defensively since Pearce replaced Kevin Keegan and going into the game at Fulham on Saturday they have not conceded two goals in their last 18 league matches.

Distin has become one of the top defenders in the top flight during that period, raising his profile dramatically.

With one year to run on his contract it would be no surprise if Pearce were to try and extend his stay.

Pearce added: “We have tried to instil in Sylvain and the rest of the defenders that strong mentality and an arrogance in his play if you like.”
