Joy for Houllier as Lyon qualify
Gerard Houllier’s Lyon blazed their way into the last 16 of the Champions League with a convincing 4-1 win at Olympiacos tonight.
The Frenchmen booked their place in the knockout stages with their fourth win from four underlining just how good they have been in this year’s tournament.
Haruna Babaginda gave the Greek hosts an early lead but once Juninho equalised it was one-way traffic.
The Brazilian deadball specialist scored with his 22nd free-kick goal for Lyon and three minutes later John Carew made it 2-1 in favour of the French champions.
Second half goals from Mahamadou Diarra and Carew again quickly settled any doubt about the outcome.
Also through in Lyon’s group are Real Madrid whose 2-0 win at Rosenborg ensures they will beat the Norwegians on head to head record even if they lose their last two group matches.
A Mikael Dorsin own goal put Real in charge before a second from Guti sealed the win for the Spaniards.
