Hasselbaink strike gives Boro unlikely win

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s first goal of the season got Middlesbrough’s UEFA Cup Group D campaign off to a winning start as the Teessiders weathered a second-half storm in Switzerland.

The Dutchman slotted home on 10 minutes as the visitors dominated the first half, although Grasshoppers striker Eduardo had a goal harshly ruled out for offside after goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer’s blunder.

However, the Swiss side had much the better of the second 45 minutes and Chris Riggott and Schwarzer had to deny Brazilians Eduardo and Rogerio inside the last 20 minutes.
