Bayern Munich slipped from the top of the table after a last-gasp penalty from Schalke’s Soren Larsen held the defending champions to a 1-1 draw.

A 19th-minute goal from Roque Santa Cruz had given Bayern a deserved lead before Schalke’s pressure eventually told with Bastian Schweinsteiger bundling over Larsen.

Bayern’s Martin Demichelis was then sent off deep into injury time for a foul on substitute Gustavo Varela.

Werder Bremen took advantage of Schalke’s late leveller and went top for the first time since winning the 2003-04 championship after a 6-2 drubbing of Nurnberg.

Hamburg missed out on the chance to go top as they were beaten 1-0 at home by Wolfsburg.

Kaiserslautern and Borussia Dortmund drew 3-3, Bayer Leverkusen lost 3-1 at lowly Mainz, Arminia Bielefeld enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 home win against Hertha Berlin and Stuttgart drew 1-1 at home to Borussia Monchengladbach.
