Rooney confident despite Keane blow

Wayne Rooney admits the loss of Roy Keane to injury is a “massive disappointment” for Manchester United – but the striker has backed his team-mates to continue their fine start to the season without their skipper.

Keane, 34, broke a metatarsal bone in his left foot following a challenge with Liverpool’s Luis Garcia in yesterday’s goalless Barclays Premiership draw at Anfield.

Rooney, who has had his temperament questioned recently after a red card against Villarreal in a Champions League tie, insists United have the squad to compensate for Keane’s loss.

“Obviously, Roy is a big part of our team. To have him missing for two months is a massive disappointment for the team,” Rooney told Sky Sports News. “But we have the players to come in and hopefully do the job for us.

“We’ve had a decent start to the season, we’ve had some tough away games and we’re still unbeaten in the league. It’s a decent start and hopefully we can continue.

“It’s a good result for us going to Liverpool away and getting a point, it is always tough going there.”
