Rea hoping for play-offs chance

Waterford United manager Brendan Rea has conceded that he would accept the lottery of a promotion-relegation play-off they way things are going at the RSC right now.

The Blues were trounced 5-0 by Shelbourne on Friday night as they extended their miserable run without a League win to 18 matches and, with Finn Harps winning on Saturday night, they then slipped to the bottom of the table on goal difference.

But Rea remains confident that Waterford can avoid automatic relegation though he concedes that avoiding relegation via a play-off would be deemed a success.

Rea said: “At this stage, I probably would take a play-off. But that doesn’t mean we don’t try and avoid the play-offs.

“But when you consider the season we’ve had - we’ve three managers, a different board, and nine players have left since the start to the season.

“If we stayed up through the play offs, it would still be a magnificent season for the Blues. We have to avoid relegation at all costs.”
