Owen in, Jenas out at Magpies
Tottenham and Newcastle were at the centre of the early action on the final day before the transfer window closes.
The Magpies were set to unveil Michael Owen after the England striker completed a medical at St James’ Park following his move from Real Madrid.
The 25-year-old could form a potentially explosive partnership with Alan Shearer after the veteran striker played a vital role in Owen agreeing a deal.
“Alan was a great help throughout and instrumental in my decision,” Owen wrote in The Times.
“I had spoken to him many times over the past few weeks and he should work for the Newcastle tourist board when he finishes playing football.”
The fee for Owen is undisclosed, although part of the deal will be funded by Jermaine Jenas’ departure to Tottenham.
The 22-year-old midfielder has completed a medical with Spurs and sealed a move to Martin Jol’s side.
Meanwhile, Tottenham look set to complete the signing of South Korea left-back Lee Young-Pyo from PSV Eindhoven, according to reports this morning.
Lee, 28, has a clause to leave the Dutch club for £1.36m (€2m) and would be a like-for-like replacement for Swedish full-back Erik Edman, who has agreed a three-year contract with Rennes, according to the French side.
In news not involving Spurs or Newcastle, Bradford striker Dean Windass is expected to stay at the club despite a link with a move to Wigan.
“I can safely say Dean Windass will be playing for us in our next game,” said Bradford boss Colin Todd.
