Everton’s European adventure got off to nightmare start when Villarreal took a 2-1 half-time lead at Goodison Park.

Former Birmingham striker Luciano Figueroa opened the scoring for the visitors, only for James Beattie to level.

Josico spectacular header then gave the Spanish side a lead when David Moyes’ side looked set to go into the interval level.
