Defoe double sinks Porto

Tottenham 2 Porto 0

England striker Jermain Defoe stole the limelight from new signing Edgar Davids as Tottenham beat Porto 2-0 at White Hart Lane.

Davids, signed from Inter Milan last week, was introduced as a second-half substitute to a rapturous reception but it was a sublime double by Defoe which really excited the Spurs fans.

The 36,112 crowd got a first glimpse of Paul Stalteri, Teemu Tainio and Wayne Routledge who all started the match.

Benni McCarthy made a lively start for the Portuguese outfit, his header being saved by Paul Robinson before Defoe tested Vitor Baia at the other end.

After another good chance for South African McCarthy, Defoe came even closer when he reached Andy Reid’s cross but failed to divert the ball into the net.

England stopper Robinson made way for Radek Cerny at half-time and Egyptian forward Mido carved out the first chance of the half, moments before Davids’ entrance on the hour mark in place of Reid.

After a typically tenacious few minutes, he came close to opening the scoring himself when he forced fellow former Barcelona player Baia to push his hard drive over the bar.

But after 72 minutes the former Portugal international custodian failed to save his side as Defoe collected Michael Carrick’s delightful pass before executing a brilliant lob to break the deadlock.

And with six minutes left on the clock Defoe made it 2-0 when Tainio’s pass set him up for another well-taken finish.
