Manchester United tasted defeat for the first time in pre-season tonight as J-League leaders Kashima Antlers survived a second half onslaught from Alex Ferguson’s men.

Two efforts from impressive Kashima striker Masashi Motoyama were enough to seal victory in a match hit by a minor earthquake midway through the opening period.

Ryan Giggs levelled the first but with Louis Saha, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Wayne Rooney and, worst of all, Park Ji-sung off target, the Red Devils surrendered their 100% record.
