Brendan Rea has been named as manager of Waterford United following the departure of caretaker manager Giles Cheevers last week.

Rea had been helping out Cheevers over the last few weeks. Cheevers has left Ireland to take up a post in the USA.

A former player with Waterford United and Kilkenny City, Rea was caretaker manager at Waterford in 2001 following the resignation of Paul Power and was recently manager of leading junior club Waterford Crystal.

"I am delighted to be offered this position," said Rea. "It is a big challenge but one I am looking forward to. My main objective to keep the club in the Premier Division of the eircom league and having spoken to the players, we are all committed to pulling together to achieve this.

"It is a massive opportunity and with Ray Moran stepping up from the Under 21's I believe we have a very good team."
