Redknapp fears new Crouch bid

Southampton manager Harry Redknapp is bracing himself for a renewed bid from Liverpool for striker Peter Crouch.

Southampton manager Harry Redknapp is bracing himself for a renewed bid from Liverpool for striker Peter Crouch.

And now Middlesbrough, Charlton and Manchester City have reportedly joined the race for the 6ft 7ins England international.

“Obviously I really want him to stay,” Redknapp told the club’s official website. “But it is a board decision and out of my hands.”

Liverpool and West Ham have both had bids of £6m (€8.7m) turned down, but the European champions appear favourites to get their man.

Redknapp is expected to invest the £500,000 (€726,000) received from Swedish side Helsingborg for Andreas Jakobsson on West Brom defender Darren Purse, who has slipped down the pecking order at The Hawthorns.

Jakobsson, 32, only joined the Saints last August but has quit the club following relegation.

The former Sweden international said: “I had some other alternatives but in this case I listened to my heart. Quite simply it was an easy choice.”

Celtic boss Gordon Strachan is expected to step up his interest in Saints defender Paul Telfer, with whom he worked at St Mary’s Stadium and at Coventry, but will have to pay a fee for the 33-year-old.
