Van Persie released

Arsenal star Robin van Persie was released from custody in Holland today after spending two weeks behind bars over rape allegations.

The 21-year-old striker had been custody in Rotterdam since being arrested on Monday June 13, after a woman claimed he launched a sex attack on her.

A prosecution spokeswoman today said Van Persie had been released earlier this afternoon and was now free to return to England.

She said he remained a suspect, but that it was no longer necessary to hold him for the purposes of the investigation.
