Robbie Keane has been ruled out of the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup qualifier against the Faroe Islands.

The Tottenham striker suffered a shoulder injury in Saturday’s 2-2 with Israel at Lansdowne Road.

Manager Brian Kerr had hoped Keane could respond to treatment in time to fly to the Faroes this morning but has been forced to accept defeat.

Keane suffered tendon and bone bruising after being clipped in the penalty area by Ariel Benado in the third minute of the game.

Keane said after the match: “When I fell, I landed awkwardly on my shoulder.

“I tried to play on with it, but it just got worse so I had to come off. It was just too sore in the end. The doctors had a look at it and it’s badly bruised.”
