Chelsea lead chase for Essien - agent

Mickael Essien’s agent claims Chelsea are leading the race to sign the Lyon midfielder after Real Madrid dropped out of the running.

The Ghanaian star is one of the most sought-after players in Europe after another impressive campaign for Les Gones, which culminated in Lyon clinching their fourth successive Ligue 1 title.

And Premiership champions Chelsea, backed by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, appear to be in pole position, according to Fabien Piveteau.

He told Spanish sports daily Marca that regulations limiting the number of non-EU players Primera Liga clubs can field have dissuaded Madrid.

“We have spoken with Madrid after they showed an interest in the player but they stated that, at this time, they don’t have a place for a non-European.

“Right now he is closer to Chelsea but both clubs have to keep on talking.”

Marca claim Madrid may yet enter the bidding, however, once they know how much Chelsea are asked to pay for the 22-year-old.

Madrid, who missed out on the league title to Barcelona this season, are thought to have earmarked central midfield as one of the areas they have to strengthen this summer.

They signed Thomas Gravesen from Everton in January but a big-name arrival is expected with Patrick Vieira and Steven Gerrard also mentioned as possible targets for the Bernabeu club.
