A 23-year-old Athlone Town soccer star has died in hospital from injuries he sustained during an accident at a derelict building in the early hours of Saturday morning.

A 23-year-old Athlone Town soccer star has died in hospital from injuries he sustained during an accident at a derelict building in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Shane Brennan suffered serious head injuries when he fell through the roof of the derelict convent in his home town of Newtownforbes in Co Longford.

He had been on a life-support machine at Mullingar General Hospital, but the machine was turned off last night.

Brennan previously played for Longford and Monaghan and was also an accomplished Gaelic football player.
