The former Spain and Real Madrid defender, now 37, has decided to retire despite pleas from manager Sam Allardyce to extend his contract.

Nicky Hunt (shoulder injury) and Ivan Campo (suspension) are both ruled out of the match with Bolton aiming to edge out Liverpool for fifth spot.
