Longford crash out of Setanta Cup

Longford bowed out of the Setanta Cup as Peter Thompson’s goal at Windsor Park moved Linfield top of Group 1 tonight.

Town’s good possession counted for nothing as they trooped off a goal down at the break.

The crucial strike came on 25 minute when Longford lost the ball and were caught square at the back as Ryan McCann threaded a super ball through to Thompson to shoot past Stephen O’Brien.

Town pushed hard throughout the second half, but Linfield held out despite having McCann sent off for retaliation on Dean Fitzgerald on 82 minutes.

A draw at Glentoran in their final match will now be enough for Linfield to make the final at Tolka Park on May 21.
