Bundesliga win buoys Bayern confidence for Chelsea tie

Bayern Munich coach Felix Magath is ready to spring an upset in the Champions League against Chelsea.

The German giants will look to turn around a 4-2 first-leg deficit at the Olympic Stadium tomorrow.

Bayern would progress to the semi-finals with a 2-0 win and Magath believes his side are more than capable of doing just that.

“We are capable of scoring two goals in 45 minutes and that is what we need against Chelsea on Tuesday,” he said after his side recovered from going a goal down to beat Borussia Monchengladbach 2-1 on Saturday in the Bundesliga.

“We have not only defended, but extended our advantage over Schalke to three points and that will comfort us, even in the Champions League. We can now go into that game with added self-confidence.”

Bayern laboured to a win against the Bundesliga strugglers, but the players’ attitudes, particularly when going behind, has encouraged Magath.

“We go into the game convinced we can knock Chelsea out,” he added.

Mehmet Scholl may have played himself into contention for a place in the starting XI following his stirring substitute performance on Saturday, which was capped by the equalising goal.

Martin Demichelis’ replacement added an extra attacking dimension to Magath’s side and he would be an option instead of the disappointing Argentinian midfielder on Tuesday.

England utility man Owen Hargreaves will also be hopeful of a start after sitting out another Bundesliga match and he may be included in midfield should Hasan Salihamidzic revert to left-back in place of Bixente Lizarazu, who was out of sorts on Saturday.

Bayern will make at least one change from the side that lost in London last Wednesday with Roy Makaay completing the full 90 minutes on Saturday and putting his name on the team sheet for Tuesday.

“I’m happy that he got through the full 90 minutes and it’s obvious that he’ll start on Tuesday,” said Magath.

“It was good for him to be able to warm himself up for the Chelsea game and I’m confident he will be effective and dangerous.”

Makaay may even be joined by Claudio Pizarro up front as the Peruvian returned to training on Sunday for the first time since suffering a thigh injury.

The 26-year-old was the match-winner against Arsenal in the last round with his two goals in Munich and Magath is hoping to have his extra firepower available to strike a second London side out of the contest.

“If he has no problems today (Monday), then it’s likely he will play from the start on Tuesday,” said Magath.
