A Mark van Bommel hat-trick helped PSV Eindhoven thrash champions Ajax 4-0 and maintain their march towards the Eredivisie title.

Phillip Cocu opened the scoring before Van Bommel struck three times in the space of 19 minutes to all but end Ajax’s faint championship hopes.

PSV, who have eight games remaining, are now 14 points clear of the Amsterdam giants.

The only team with a prayer of catching them is AZ Alkmaar, who are now seven points behind.

Elsewhere, a late goal by Erik Nevland earned Groningen a 1-1 draw against Willem II, Heerenveen moved to within two points of fifth-placed Vitesse Arnhem with a 1-0 win at Utrecht and Twente Enschede beat ADO Den Haag 2-1.
