Becks optimistic on Real future

David Beckham tonight vowed to end his playing days in Spain and told Real Madrid: “You’ve yet to see the best of me.”

The England captain’s performances have gone up a notch since the appointment of new coach Wanderley Luxemburgo, and Beckham insists he will not be looking for a return to the Premiership.

“I am 30 in May,” said Beckham, “but I think I have a good few years when I can play at the top level.

“I think the best is to come. The start of the year has been refreshing for me and it is all looking better.

“My position is that I signed a four-year deal with Real Madrid.

“When I left Manchester United, I thought I would end my career at Real Madrid – that is what I want.

“If there is another deal I want to stay here. My family are happy here and that is the most important thing for me.”

Beckham’s form has picked up this year, and he believes Brazilian boss Luxemburgo is capable of bringing trophies to Madrid, after a barren 2003-04 season and a stuttering start to the current campaign.

Madrid are six points adrift of leaders Barcelona in the Primera Liga and head Juventus 1-0 after the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash.

The signs are that Luxemburgo is turning the club’s fortunes around, and Beckham has been pleased by his own form.

He continued: “I think it has come back in a couple of recent games, but the most important thing is getting the win.

“Now we have a manager who has come here knowing what he wants and how to get it. It has worked. Players respect him.

“What we need is to be worked hard and to have confidence, it doesn’t matter who you are, but if someone comes in and gives you confidence, that sets you up.

“He has helped me because I realise if I don’t work hard I will not be in the team.

“He’s moved me slightly to the right and the whole formation of the team is better than it has been for a while.”
