McDonnell to extend Pats stay

St Patrick’s Athletic manager John McDonnell will today put pen to paper on a new contract extension that will keep him at Richmond Park until the end of the 2006 season.

St Patrick’s Athletic manager John McDonnell will today put pen to paper on a new contract extension that will keep him at Richmond Park until the end of the 2006 season.

A St Pat’s playing legend, McDonnell replaced Eamonn Collins as manager in May 2004 initially agreeing an 18-month contract though the club has now moved to tie him to a longer deal.

The club he inherited was crippled financially by spiralling wages and dwindling crowds but the manager successfully cut the wage bill while keeping the side competitive and he is hoping for a successful year this season.

“I suppose it is a sign that the club are happy with what we’re doing and want to show everybody that we’re at the club for the long term,” said McDonnell.

“We’re working towards getting the club heading back in the right direction and I’m happy with the application the players have put in this pre-season.”
