Lambert's lament for Dortmund

Paul Lambert has warned that if Borussia Dortmund go into bankruptcy, then it can happen to any club.

The veteran Celtic and former Scotland star, who won the European Cup with the Bundesliga club in 1997, has expressed his concern about his former club’s shocking demise.

Dortmund have warned they will go bankrupt if rescue talks with creditors fail.

Lambert said: “It is unbelievable and very sad what has happened as Dortmund are a brilliant club.

“I just hope they survive for the sake of the supporters as the German league needs that club to be there.

“It is unbelievable how they have gone from Champions League winners to big, big money trouble in the space of years.

“It just shows you how the money thing can affect you. It’s the same as either of the Old Firm. If you take them out of it then the city and the country would be losing so much.”

Lambert and Martin O’Neill have jumped to the defence of under-fire goalkeeper Robert Douglas but the Celtic manager cannot guarantee he will be at the club next season.

The Scotland number one, who dropped a clanger in last weekend’s Old Firm defeat to gift Rangers the advantage in the title race, has still not been offered a contract even though his deal runs out this summer.

O’Neill said: “I don’t think that (contract uncertainty) has got anything to do with it (his Old Firm mistake).

“Rab will have a number of options in the summer. He is out of contract and if rumours are to be believed there will be a number of teams interested in taking him.

“I am sure ideally that if offered a contract here he would give it some consideration but there are lots of things to be discussed between now and the end of the season. It is still February.

“I will sit down and give it some consideration. He and his agent will be the first people to know but any player who comes to the end of his contract and has a number of offers will have to consider everything.”

O’Neill defended Douglas after his mistake adding: “Rab’s got over these things before. It is not the end of the world, we can come back from this, and that is what we intend to do.”

Celtic travel to Clyde in the quarter-finals of the Tennent’s Scottish Cup tomorrow.
