Ronald Koeman has resigned as coach of Ajax, citing Thursday’s UEFA Cup exit at the hands of Auxerre as the deciding factor behind his decision.

The Amsterdammers crashed out 3-2 on aggregate in France after a late goal from Auxerre substitute Lionel Mathis, and this leaves them fighting on the domestic front where they lie eight points behind Eredivisie leaders PSV Eindhoven.

In a statement released by Ajax, Koeman said: “I have asked the board and management to immediately end the co-operation.

"I have to be honest to myself and Ajax. The result of yesterday evening was decisive.”
