Chelsea could face fine over UEFA no-show
Chelsea are facing a possible UEFA fine after Jose Mourinho refused to attend the mandatory press conference following his team’s 2-1 defeat in Barcelona.
Their decision was thought to be founded on Mourinho’s unease at a tunnel incident at half-time in the Champions League match, which Chelsea will report to European football’s governing body.
UEFA spokesman William Gaillard admitted that Chelsea would be asked why Mourinho failed to show, with any possible punishment then likely to be subject to the club’s response.
Barcelona boss Frank Rijkaard’s discussion with Swedish referee Anders Frisk is the basis on which Chelsea are unhappy.
Rijkaard said: “I was there and nothing happened. I was not the cause of the incident.”
Chelsea took the lead last night with a Juliano Belletti own goal, but the dismissal of striker Didier Drogba was followed by goals for the home side from Maxi Lopez and Samuel Eto’o.
