But Harry Kewell returned after a two-month injury lay-off to partner Milan Baros up front, while Igor Biscan took over from Gerrard in centre midfield, with Luis Garcia also back from a domestic suspension.

Anthony Le Tallec and Vladimir Smicer were on the bench for this first-leg match.

Opponents Bayer Leverkusen were without key defender Jens Nowotny, who has suffered a serious cruciate knee ligament injury. His replacement was Jan-Ingwer Callsen-Bracker.
