Forssell eyes comeback

Chelsea striker Mikael Forssell plans to return from his knee injury to play a part in his side’s quadruple bid this season.

The 23-year-old was on loan at Birmingham this season but is back at Stamford Bridge after a knee injury suffered in September.

Jose Mourinho’s side are still involved in four competitions and Forssell wants to compete with current strikers Didier Drogba, Mateja Kezman and Eidur Gudjohnsen for a regular place.

The Finland international believes he could be back in action within six weeks, and he admits he is desperate to start playing again.

Forssell said: “The operation went well and hopefully I will be back fit in six to eight weeks’ time. When you are injured the days last longer, but I am feeling better and seeing light at the end of the tunnel.

“For this season, if I am going to play football it is with Chelsea. At the moment I am a Chelsea player and I am concentrating on Chelsea.

“I just want to get fit and then Jose will look at me in a different way. I have had a chat with him, he sees my rehabilitation has gone well. I am training by myself with a physio and it is going really well, playing would be my dream.

“I want my knee to be 100% but I have to train with the first team before I can get back in the team.

“The team is very strong now, I will have to give the others the elbow,” he joked. “It will be difficult but I will have to keep on fighting.”

Forsell has been tipped for a bright future at Chelsea since joining the club as a youngster from HJK Helsinki.

He has enjoyed successful loan spells at Crystal Palace and Borussia Moenchengladbach in the German Bundesliga, and had a huge part in Birmingham’s 10th-placed finish last season.

Blues boss Steve Bruce signed him for another season but injury struck and Forssell was sent back to London for treatment.

“I think last season, everything clicked,” Forssell added on Sky Sports. “This season their ambitions are higher because they have established themselves in the Premiership now.”

Forssell admits he struggled to come to terms with being injured, but is now ready to fight his way back into Mourinho’s side.

“I tried to see positive things but at first I could not bear watching football,” he added. “It has been a long time, but I am a sportsman and this is my profession.”

Should Forssell achieve his goal and play for Chelsea against this season, the striker could have an important role in bringing four trophies to the club.

“You can see the players are buzzing, the team spirit is excellent and everyone is working,” he added.

“Four trophies is a bit big, but it is still possible, at the moment we are just concentrating on the league.”
