Defoe earns Spurs fourth round replay
FT West Brom 1 Tottenham 1
Jermain Defoe earned Tottenham an FA Cup fourth round replay against a vastly improved West Brom.
Baggies fans were convinced Defoe had made a meal of the challenge on him by defender Darren Purse in winning the penalty which he converted himself for his 16th goal of the campaign.
Defoe’s spot-kick cancelled out an earlier effort from Robert Earnshaw for the home side, who also struck the woodwork twice.
Spurs midfielder Atouba became the first player to be booked for a clumsy challenge on Purse.
A Gera free-kick struck the Tottenham defensive wall after Davies had brought down Kanu 20 yards out.
With 15 minutes left former Wolves striker Robbie Keane and Dean Marney came on for Defoe and Davies respectively.
West Brom’s response was to bring on Kevin Campbell and Geoff Horsfield in place of Earnshaw and Kanu in a bid to grab a late winner.
Atouba had a shot deflected wide in the closing minutes but it would have been cruel on Albion had they been denied a second chance.
