Agent: Gers to tie up Kyrgiakos concert

Greek defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos is finally set to sign for Rangers, according to the player’s agent.

The 25-year-old was expected to have been unveiled yesterday after a £1.75m (€2.5m) fee had been agreed with Panathinaikos.

But personal terms could not be agreed despite 12 hours of talks.

However agent Steve Alexou was confident all hurdles could be overcome today.

He told The Scottish Sun: “Everything is going okay with Rangers and my client and I’m expecting to close the deal in the next 24 hours.

“It has been a very long negotiation with Rangers and we have been discussing several issues over the contract.

“One of the issues has been the duration of the contract and the other is that Rangers are trying to put a clause in where they can save themselves paying a lot of money in case of an injury.”

Kyrgiakos suffered a knee injury in a Champions League game last season - against Rangers.

The Ibrox club have an unhappy history of signing players who have gone on to be hampered by previous knee problems, with the most famous being Daniel Prodan.

The Romanian international did not play a single game for them, although he did go on to captain his country after leaving Glasgow.

Rangers are also keen to tie up a deal for former captain Barry Ferguson, who is waiting to hear from Blackburn whether his transfer request will be accepted now that Robbie Savage has arrived at Ewood Park.

Manager Alex McLeish has identified Hibernian captain Ian Murray and Monaco striker Shabani Nonda as summer signing targets when both will be out of contract. Both have spent lengthy spells on the sidelines recovering from knee injuries.
