Ruud van Nistelrooy is set to go for a scan today amid deepening concern about his calf problem.

The prolific Dutchman reported the injury to SAlex Ferguson a month ago and he has missed the last three major games, including Monday’s 1-1 draw with Fulham.

Ferguson had hoped the rest would allow the problem to clear up.

However, van Nistelrooy – who tops United’s goal chart this season with 12 - is still suffering a worrying amount of pain, forcing Ferguson to send him for medical assessment to establish whether there is any long-term danger.

“Ruud isn’t any better and we are having to reassess what we are going to do about it,” Ferguson told the Manchester Evening News,

“The danger is with calf injuries they start to move down to the Achilles. That is our concern.

“He will go for a scan today and then we will wait and see what to do next.”
