Kennedy backs Gray to lead Wolves

Wolves Irish winger Mark Kennedy believes caretaker-coach Stuart Gray would be a popular choice among the players to occupy the Molineux hotseat on a permanent basis.

Wanderers have yet to appoint a successor to Dave Jones, dismissed a month ago, but Gray has emerged as a viable candidate after three wins and a draw in his last five matches in charge.

“I’d like to stress that we are all supportive of Stuart,” Kennedy told the club’s official website, www.wolves.premiumtv.co.uk.

“He is a high-quality guy and a high-quality coach. If he is asked to stay on then I know all the lads would be happy with that, but whether or not that happens is out of our hands.

“This is a huge club with a massive fan base and a great history. There’s been a few managers here in recent years and obviously the club wants to make the right decision.”

Kennedy will come up against the club which gave him his senior debut at the age of 16 when Wolves host Millwall tonight.

However, after moving on to Liverpool in 1995, before spells at Wimbledon and Manchester City, Kennedy insists there will be no time for sentiment this evening.

“As far as I am concerned, the most important thing about this game is getting another three points,” said Kennedy.

“I started out over here with Millwall and it is a fantastic club. They’ve got great support and they have done well in the last few years. But it is 10 years since I left and there’s been a lot of changes to their squad and staff.”

The match will also be a dress-rehearsal for next month’s FA Cup third-round clash against the Lions, with last season’s beaten finalists again visiting Molineux.
