Longford Town officials have expressed disappointment at the departure of defender Graham Gartland to eircom League premier division rivals Drogheda United.

Gartland, aged 22, signed on for Drogheda last week after rejecting a new two-year contract offer with double Cup winners Longford.

“The club is very disappointed with the player’s decision given that the contract offered was what the player had requested,” a Longford Town statement read on its official website.

The midlanders also confirmed that midfielder Brian Byrne has decided to retire.

Drogheda, meanwhile, have released Gary Cronin, Aidan Lynch, John Lester, John Flanagan and Sean McClare.
