Fitzgerald opts to leave Blues
Waterford United midfielder Wayne Fitzgerald has played his last game for the Blues after deciding to leave the club.
Fitzgerald, who is suspended for Waterford’s final league game of the season against Derry City at the RSC tonight, has decided to leave the club to concentrate on his work as an accountant, despite pleas from player-manager Alan Reynolds to see out the remaining year on his contract.
The 24-year-old has been with Waterford for four years but has spent the majority of this season on the treatment table following knee surgery.
"I'd like to thank the club for their support over the past few seasons and in particular this year when I was injured and needed an operation," Fitzgerald told Waterford-united.ie.
Reynolds said: "I've tried to persuade him to change his mind. I know he's had a frustrating year with injuries but he was very much a part of my plans for next season.
“He has a year to go on his contract and I am releasing him from that commitment reluctantly. I'll be leaving the door open for him in case he changes his mind."
