Manchester United have announced the appointment of Jim O’Neill to the club’s board as a new independent non-executive director.

O’Neill, aged 47, has been head of global economic research for Goldman Sachs since September 2001.

Prior to that, he worked as co-head of global economics and chief currency economist at the firm, which he joined as a partner in October 1995.

Manchester United chairman Roy Gardner said: “Jim is a first class businessman who brings with him an energy and commitment that few could match. His knowledge and experience will be a great asset to the Board in our future growth.”

O’Neill, who will take up the position on November 22, said: “It is a great privilege to be appointed to the board of Manchester United. I am very much looking forward to working with the board and the management team at this important time for the company.”
