Internationals drain us, says Duff

Winger Damien Duff believes Chelsea have only stuttered this season when the club’s stars have returned from international duty.

Duff is certain to play for the Republic Of Ireland against Croatia in tonight’s friendly encounter at Lansdowne Road but admits that Chelsea have struggled to find the same zest on their return to Premiership duty.

Leaders Chelsea face high-flying Bolton Wanderers at Stamford Bridge on Saturday but Duff should be in a better position than most of his team-mates by playing tonight instead of tomorrow.

Chelsea’s players are now seasoned travellers, both in the Champions League and on the international scene, but boss Jose Mourinho is already concerned that the main detriment to the team’s form comes after many of the squad have been away on international duty.

Duff agreed: “I know a couple of times this season we have come back from internationals and have struggled on the Saturday. So I think there’s something in that.

“But the manager is brilliant. He can tell who is tired and who is not and I am sure he will make the right decisions.

“I’ve noticed the effect of travelling on me. We’ve got a huge squad here and if you’re feeling tired then a top-quality player usually comes in who can do the job as well.”
