Saints steal win against Pompey
Southampton 2 Portsmouth 1
Kevin Phillips headed a dramatic winner four minutes after appearing as a substitute in the 67th minute to give Southampton head coach Steve Wigley a much-needed win over local rivals Portsmouth.
Phillips nodded in a free-kick from fellow sub Jason Dodd – who had replaced centre back Andreas Jakobsson in only the 14th minute after the Swede headed an own goal to get Pompey off to a flying start.
But the visitors lost top scorer Aiyegbeni Yakubu through injury before half time and Patrick Berger hit the bar before Phillips sealed Saints’ first Barclays Premiership win in 11 matches.
