Republic stable as Scots sink to new low in rankings

Scotland today plunged to a new low by dropping another nine places in the latest FIFA world rankings to 77th.

It is the final proof the national team could not go on for much longer under Berti Vogts, who resigned after a poor start to the World Cup qualifying campaign.

His assistant Tommy Burns has been made caretaker coach for the friendly with Sweden next week.

Scotland are now ranked behind the likes of Congo, Estonia, Ghana, Angola and Thailand.

The Republic of Ireland are unchanged in 14th place since October’s rankings were published, with England also unmoved in seventh, Wales down six to 63rd and Northern Ireland up three places to joint 107th alongside Georgia.

Brazil, France and Argentina remain one, two and three respectively.
