Desailly turned down British trio
Former Chelsea captain Marcel Desailly claims that Celtic, Crystal Palace and Portsmouth were all keen to bring him back to British football on a free transfer before an offer from Qatari club Al Ittihad proved impossible to turn down.
The 36-year-old, who won 116 France caps before quitting international football this summer, had been without a club after leaving Stamford Bridge at the end of last season.
But, having flown into Doha for talks earlier in the day, Desailly agreed yesterday to further his career in the Middle East and signed an eight-month deal.
“I’ve made my decision after mature reflection,” he insisted.
“I’m very happy to undertake this new experience which will last until June 10 2005.
“I’d do well to thank the officials from the many clubs who have had me in their thoughts in the past few weeks – Crystal Palace, Portsmouth, Glasgow Celtic and I forget the others.
“I must also thank the Ghanaian sports minister who offered me the position of coach.”
