Newcastle skipper Alan Shearer fired home the 350th league and cup goal of his career as Graeme Souness’ men finally broke 10-man West Brom’s stubborn resistance.

The 34-year-old struck from close range with four minutes of the game remaining after Patrick Kluivert had scored his fourth goal in as many starts and substitute James Milner had opened his Newcastle account in the space of eight second-half minutes.

Gary Megson’s side finally wilted after having skipper Darren Purse harshly sent off on 63 minutes, but they got some reward for their efforts when substitute Geoff Horsfield headed home on 87 minutes.
