Derby fans respond to Clough tribute plans

Derby chief executive Jeremy Keith has described as “incredible” the response from fans after the club appealed for suggestions as to how best to commemorate former manager Brian Clough, who died this week.

Clough, who was 69, passed away at Derby City Hospital on Monday after having contracted stomach cancer.

The Middlesbrough-born Clough had taken charge at the Baseball Ground in 1967 and led the Rams from old Second Division obscurity to the Football League championship in 1972.

To mark his achievements, the Rams had asked supporters to forward suggestions as to what might make the best lasting memorial.

Keith has promised fans all the suggestions submitted will be studied but is calling on fans to be patient.

He said: “We are determined to work with Brian’s family and supporters to reach a decision on an appropriate way to celebrate Brian’s contribution to football in the East Midlands, something that will reflect his lasting legacy.

“The incredible response to appeals for ideas has illustrated the depth of feeling supporters have for Brian but any decision has to be for the future.

“Brian was part of the family of football but he was also a husband, father and grandfather and it is important for us to respect his own family’s desire for privacy at this sad time.

“We should stand aside for now and wait until an appropriate time to discuss the way forward.

“In the meantime we will have the opportunity to pay our respects and celebrate his life at Pride Park Stadium on Saturday.”
