Keane: Don't trust anyone new

Manchester United skipper Roy Keane has claimed he has had to learn to choose his friends carefully or risk being “stitched up”.

The straight-talking Keane told United’s fanzine United we Stand: “Just when you think someone’s not such a bad guy I guarantee you they’ll ask you for something.

“Don’t trust anyone new. You have to learn to choose your friends carefully or they will stitch you up.

“You try to get to know people and give them the benefit of the doubt. I’ll meet 100 people in the next two weeks and 99% of them will ask me for something.

“I could give you perfect examples of people who I’ve looked after and then they come out with some s*** about you.”

Keane has been charged with assault and criminal damage, police said yesterday.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “Roy Keane has this afternoon been charged with a section 4 public order criminal damage and a section 39 assault relating to an incident that occurred in the Hale area on September 4, 2004.

“He will appear before Trafford Magistrates on Thursday, September 23, 2004.”
