There seems to be little more than local bragging rights up for grabs when St Patrick’s Athletic face Shamrock Rovers at Richmond Park tonight (7pm).
John McDonnell’s Pat’s side looked to have finally pulled themselves out of the relegation mire with a 2-1 win over Waterford United last weekend. With bottom club Dublin City losing at Drogheda and getting a draw at Bohemians, Pat’s are nine points clear of the danger zone having played a game less than the Vikings.
Victory tonight against their Inchicore tenants Rovers will send them above the Hoops and into sixth place in the premier division.
Even though midfielder Keith Fahey is serving a one-match ban, manager McDonnell has extra firepower at his disposal with the addition of Brendan Markey and Robbie Doyle to his squad before the transfer window closed earlier in the week.
Liam Buckley’s Rovers will welcome back Stephen Grant from susension and right-back Trevor Croly but Keith Doyle will have to pass a fitness test on a thigh strain picked up last week in the 3-2 loss to Bohemians if he is to feature.
The Dublin derby is the only premier division fixture tonight with Waterford United having played Shelbourne on Wednesday and Cork City’s clash with Drogheda United postponed due to international call-ups.
Drogheda have arranged a friendly fixture with Newry Town at United Park tonight in its place. Kick-off is 7.45pm.
