Craig Brown has left Preston North End today by mutual consent.

The former Scotland manager met with chairman Derek Shaw this morning and agreed to stand down with immediate effect.

A club statement read: “First team affairs will now be handled by Billy Davies and all relevant factors will be taken into consideration before a permanent appointment is made.

Chairman Derek Shaw told the official club website www.pnefc.co.uk: “I would like to put on record my sincere thanks for all Craig’s efforts and it is sad for myself and everyone connected to the club that such a fine ambassador will be leaving.

“This is a very difficult decision as these people become very close, but we have agreed, in the best interests of Preston North End, that it is time for a change.

“Billy Davies will be selecting the side for the Rotherham United game and Preston North End will take its time to consider the right decision over the long term future of the position.”

Craig Brown added: “It has been a privilege to work with such a fine club and it goes without saying that I wish everyone associated with the Preston North End good fortune in the future.

“This time last year we were in a similar position then went on a run to take us to a play-off position by January. I feel strongly that this is very possible yet again.

“I know the team is in the hands of an extremely capable coach and I am sure that Billy is the man to bring success to the club.”

Billy Davies said: “We will carry on with the running of the team and try very hard to turn things round. I am disappointed that Craig has left but we’ll be working to pick up as many points as we can.”

Preston are currently fifth from bottom of the Coca-Cola Championship.
