Spector and Eagles to start for United, Keane out
There was a mixture of euphoria and disappointment among the Manchester United supporters tonight ahead of this Champions League qualifier.
The euphoria came from the news that the club had made a £20m (€29.7m) bid for Everton and England striker Wayne Rooney.
The downside for the fans was the absence – for the next three weeks – of captain Roy Keane with two cracked ribs.
Manager Alex Ferguson told MUTV: “He has been in a bit of pain the last two or three games and it is too big a risk to play him now. We took him for a scan and it (the injury) was much more pronounced than before.
“If he took a bang in a game he could puncture a lung and that could put him out for months.”
American youngster Jonathan Spector was drafted in at the back and another starlet Chris Eagles started in midfield.
Experienced campaigners Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes were both on the bench with United aiming to build on a 2-1 advantage against the Romanians.
