Henrik Larsson believes Celtic can continue their upward trend – with Martin O’Neill in charge.

The Sweden striker left Parkhead, where he became a cult figure, for Barcelona after scoring 242 goals in 315 games for the Scottish champions.

Although he arrived under coach Wim Jansen, Larsson realised his full potential when 0’Neill moved from Leicester.

“He brought a lot to Celtic when he came in with his coaching team,” Larsson told TV magazine Sky.

“They were very important in creating the success of the last few years.

“They know how to deal with players and have great coaching skills.

“Martin O’Neill has a passion for football and for Celtic and that makes a big difference.

“Martin made it clear he wanted to stay. I am sure Celtic will keep moving in the right direction.

“They are a fantastic club with amazing support.”

Larsson had little hesitation in joining the Champions League contenders and is delighted to be lining up alongside Ronaldinho.

“He is simply one of the best in the world. I remember playing against him for Celtic and some of the things he does are outrageous,” he said.

“He has amazing ability, balance and awareness and the confidence to try things others wouldn’t.”

Larsson added: “When I left Celtic I said that I only wanted to go to a club that was going to compete and be in the running to win things.

“For me it was important to be playing at this level. There were never any doubts in my mind that Barcelona were a quality footballing side.”
