The Football Association have charged referee Andy D’Urso with "less than proficiently applying the laws of the game".

D’Urso failed to send off Blackburn’s Barry Ferguson after twice booking him during Rovers’ Barclays Premiership game at Southampton on Saturday.

D’Urso has acknowledged his error in his match report and a sending off will now be included on Ferguson’s disciplinary record. He will serve a one-match suspension with immediate effect.

Blackburn lost 3-2 after Southampton were given a controversial last-minute penalty. Ferguson was shown the yellow card for protesting at the award of the spot-kick but not sent off despite being booked for an earlier foul.
