Jonathan Woodgate’s medical with Real Madrid is by no means a formality, despite the confidence of Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd.

The 24-year-old has made only 37 appearances in just under 20 months at St James’ Park and has been in Germany of late receiving treatment for a thigh injury.
