Stoke defender Gerry Taggart has signed a new one-year deal at the Britannia Stadium.

The experienced Northern Ireland international has been mulling over the offer for the last few weeks and had reportedly been a target for Championship rivals Derby.

The deal is a massive boost for the Potters as they prepare for their opening game of the season against Wolves on Sunday.

The 33-year-old joined Stoke last season from Leicester following a successful loan spell and became a cornerstone of Tony Pulis’ side.

Director of football John Rudge said: “This is a massive signing and we are glad that a player of Gerry’s stature wants to play for Stoke City.

“His influence on the pitch was clear to see last season and certainly adds both quality and depth to our squad.”
